mChek unveils growth plans

Mobile payments and security company, mChek is all set to expand its operations in the country and is now looking to raise $5-15 million in its second round of funding. Earlier funded by Draper Fisher Jurvetson, the company is likely to rope in another private equity player for its second round of expansion. Mobile Money

Visa International has joined hands with mChek, Corporation Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank to extend its existing card-to-card Visa Money Transfer service to the mobile telecom platform. Sanjay Swamy of mChek said, “Visa is already providing a card-to-card money transfer facility in association with a number of banks. Under the existing system, customers of a bank (offering the Visa Money Transfer service) holding a Visa debit or credit card can send money to another Visa cardholder with some other bank using the ATM or internet banking platform of their own bank. The new service will be an extension of the existing facility wherein Visa card holders can send money from their handsets.”

Banks switch to anytime mobile transaction

Citi India, along with mobile solutions provider mChek, has tested a pilot project which allows clients of a leading brokerage to respond to margin calls, or enhance their credit limits, by authorising transactions over their mobile phones. Citi and mChek are also exploring the possibilities of providing similar products for the MF platform. They have also launched a mobile-based application which enables farmers to receive money for sale of farm produce through their mobile phones. Here, an ‘intent to pay’ is communicated to the person on his mobile phone, which he can redeem at the partner-bank’s cash counter.

Airtel has tied up with mobile payment company mChek, and now allows postpaid customers to pay their bills by sending a simple SMS. But customers need to have a valid Visa credit card issued by any Indian or MNC bank to avail of this facility. MChek is in the process of adding MasterCard also to its payment option. After which debit cards will become an acceptable payment option. Says Sanjay Swamy, CEO, mChek, “Instead of standing in queues or wasting time going to a particular place to debit the amount, people will prefer to make the payments from the comfort of their homes, by simply typing out an SMS. But these are still early days and there is a long way to go before it becomes a way of life for Indians.”

Using your mobile to make a payment

On September 6, mChek, an Indian ingenuity-fuelled player in mobile solutions announced that its secure and on-demand mobile payments platform, would be used by the nation’s largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel to launch an ‘anytime anywhere’ bill payment facility. It will allow an Airtel customer with any make of hand phone (who is also a Visa credit card holder) to pay the mobile phone bill using a simple SMS and to receive instant acknowledgement. mChek is known to have already signed up with State Bank of India and ICICI Bank and their customers can expect to be offered similar services in the near future.

Dialog and NDB introduce mChek
